Welcome to The HR Misfit Blog, where I share my perspectives and experiences in human resources. Whether you found us by chance or intentionally (hey, I'll take it!), I aim to offer a fresh take on HR that focuses on real-life situations rather than another blog on how to improve culture. While those are great, there are plenty of those out there and plenty of companies that are killing the conversation around culture. My goal is to challenge traditional HR practices with practical insights and a bit of humor.
My Story
I consider myself a hands-on, passionate business leader dedicated to helping organizations generate value through their people while leading diverse teams and fueling business growth. I have 25 years’ experience driving HR strategy in high growth environments focused on business process transformation, innovation and change, and creating impactful talent management practices.
Now that you've got a snippet of my professional "Linked-In" introduction, let me give a highlight of the experiences and values that have really shaped me into the HR misfit that I am today.
I fell into HR after getting hired at the NCAA in 1996, the same year I graduated high school. After seven years at the NCAA (the first year answering the NCAA switchboard, followed by six years in various HR support roles) and a fresh new bachelor's degree, I was ready to take on the world and left collegiate sports to accept a position at Rolls-Royce. Yes, all you detail oriented people - it took me that long to get my degree. I was a single mom, juggling full-time work and college courses. It was a heavy load, one that shaped me significantly. More on that another time. Fast forward 20 years, add in a master's degree and plenty of mistakes, challenges, adventures, and honing of my leadership skills in various industries including non-profit and biotech, I now work as the CHRO for an IT Managed Services company headquartered in Indianapolis. I love what I do and work alongside a team of great Tech and HR professionals.
This blog offers my thoughts on the function of HR and is geared towards HR practitioners, executives, business leaders and even small business owners that only know HR as portrayed on "The Office." Love that show, but we've evolved my friends! I invite you to join me as we explore HR in a way that benefits everyone in the workplace. I welcome your questions, comments, feedback and insights.
